How many extra activities are your children involved in?
I was at my nephews baseball tournament this past weekend (The children on his team are 5&6 and played 3 games in one day) and I kept over hearing the parents talking about all of these activities that there children are involved in, and after thinking about it I realized that every time I talk to my brother he is constantly dropping one of the kids off at ball, or dance, or gymnastics, or music lessons…. these kids do a million things!!!! So my question is how many activities are your children involved in? What would you say is the average? And how much do you feel is just too much? I am all for over-achievers…. hey do it while you are young… but it just seems like a lot sometimes.
I agree it almost seems with some people like a contest to see who can have their child in the most activities. Then they complain about it as if they are so tired of driving them everywhere when the child probably doesn’t want to do half the things they do and the parents sign them up.
I have 4 boys.
My twins are 15, one of them does baseball only the other does baseball in the fall and cross country running in the winter. They both also played in the band at school during middle school but are not doing it this year in high school.
My 12 yr old (turning 13 in April) plays baseball and is in the video club. He also did cross country in the fall. He plays saxophone in the school band but this does not happen outside of school. He used to play piano.
My youngest just plays baseball and is going to join cross country this fall.
I try to limit them to one sport and one other activity at a time. I think kids need free time to just be kids. I also never make them do something they are not enjoying, the whole point is for it to be fun. I hate to see parents dragging a crying child out of the car to play baseball bribing them with treats if they play or telling them they can’t quit etc…

My mom wants to cancel my guitar lessons?
Please help! I am very serious about learning guitar and I have a very good teacher that my dad knows well. The lessons cost $21/week at my local music store. We’ve been hit by the recession pretty bad lately. Now, my mother is threatening to cancel my guitar lessons because she’s not seeing the results she would like. She wants me to learn 20 bazillion well-known classic rock songs. I love Led Zeppelin, Boston and all but lately I’ve been getting into old Metallica and have been interested in learning how to improvise. (She thinks Metallica is complete garbage) So I took a couple lessons to learn some basic musical theory (Major/Minor/Pentatonic scales and 7 modes) that I could apply to guitar. She got angry because she thinks I’m wasting lessons, and therefore her money. Is there any way I could convince her otherwise?
ask her if you can do some chores around the house or in the yard to earn the money. that way technically the money would be yours and you can learn whatever music you want to. i’m sorry she doesn’t appreciate metallica….

What all is involved to get a special education music teacher? (College-wise)?
I want to go into special education and music.
(I don’t want to do music therapy.)
How would I go about doing this, and is it possible?
Music has been proven to help special needs children.
Are there any colleges/universities in Florida that have good special ed programs? (I have Florida Pre-paid)

You could get a double major in special education and music education. Since both of these majors require quite a few credits, it could take an extra year or perhaps even two. I don’t know, however, what kind of job you could get. Public schools don’t generally hire people in this area.
It’s possible that you could somehow create your own job. If it doesn’t work out, you could just get a job teaching special ed.
